At one point in time or another, you have probably had someone tell you to make sure and stretch before heading out for a run. Even though it might make logical sense to warm up before running, there is no evidence that supports the need to stretch before exercising. In fact, some individuals believe that stretching will cause you to be slower.
If you are planning on maximizing your run, you need to be as efficient as possible at all times. Just imagine how much further you would be able to go if you were to wave your arms high above your head the whole time you were running along. Stretches tend to undermine your running efficiency.
Doing certain moves will make you a less efficient runner.
Don’t make one of these three key mistakes:
You do static stretches before exercising Bend at your waist and try to touch your toes. Stay there for about 30 seconds. Those are static stretches. In reality, they negatively affect your performance. Your muscles end up feeling like a giant rubber band.
When they aren’t as flexible and they are shorter, they tend to snap backwards. A tighter hamstring will cause the tendons to snap back without requiring a lot of effort on your part, thus allowing you to conserve energy and oxygen.
You find yourself skipping dynamic movements Dynamic moves like lunges, hip lifts and high-knee walking gear your body up for a special run. Full-body movements tend to activate all of the muscles within your body without causing them any harm like static stretching does.
You don’t have knee and hip flexibility When your hips and knees are tighter, it causes you not to be as efficient when running. While some exercises and movements are great for your healthand well-being, you want to make sure you aren’t interfering with any movement and activity levels in general. Try something such as the rear-footed elevated quad stretch to help limber you up and keep your body going. The key is giving yourself a little time before you end up doing any stretches. Aim for three times per week to do the stretch.
When you follow the tips above, you can make sure you are doing everything in your power to stay healthy and active the right way.
