Due to recent advancements in technology, handling a long-distance relationship is easier. You can now Skype your partner, text them from anywhere, and have proper communication that's not just on a phone or in a chat room.
However, in spite of this, there's just no substitute for your partner actually being there. Sometimes, a long-distance relationship can prove to be difficult, whether it's poor communication or just a desire to see each other. So how can you make the relationship work long enough until both of you are ready to live together?
1. Settle Arguments/Confusion through phone/Skype
Arguing through text is a bad idea. You can plan your conversation out better, but that also means sacrificing body language, tone of voice, and other indicators of context. Call or Skype your partner if you two are arguing.
2. Keep Seeing Each Other Consistently
A long-distance relationship just won't work if you go months, or even years, without actual contact. Make plans to see each other. This may be easier or more difficult depending on distance and money, but both of you need to make an effort for regular visitation.
3. Have Distractions
While your lover is always on your mine, you also need to have something to occupy your time with while you wait. Go to school, get a new hobby, try a new job. Do whatever it takes so that it makes the pain more manageable.
4. Try Skype Sex
We all have desires, and while your partner will not be able to fulfill them all the time, you can schedule Skype sex to make the experience a bit more authentic. It's a great way to bond as a couple.
5. Have the Same Goals
Finally, you two need to have the same goals in mind, or at least similar enough to form a compromise. A long-distance relationship has to become just a relationship eventually. If one of you is eager to move in with the other, but the other is not interested in that and instead wants to explore around the world, it won't end well. You have to keep shortening that distance until you two are together, and if you don't, the relationship will eventually fizzle, no matter how much you keep trying to spice it.
