Avocados (Persea americana) originate from the state of Puebla in Mexico but they can grow in other parts of the world. Along with their good taste avocados have a lot of health benefits.
1. Avocados are a superfood
Avocados contain 20 different vitamins and minerals. They are quite rich in vitamin K, vitamin C, potassioum, vitamins B5 and B6, vitamin E and folate. They also have small amounts of magnesium, zinc, iron, vitamin A, B1, B2 and B3 and others.
Each of the vitamins and minerals have their own health benefits including controlling blood pressure and fighting disease. They’re also good for the eyes, crucial during pregnancy and may even prevent cancer.
One extra good thing about avocados is that they’re low in saturated fat and don’t contain sodium or cholesterol.
2. Avocados love your heart
Avocados have more potassium than bananas and contain 14% of the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance). Potassium is proven to protect the heart form diseases and lower blood pressure.
Avocados are also rich in fats, and that’s good news. Most of the fat is oleic acid (a monosaturated acid) which makes it healthy
for the heart. Studies have shown that oleic acid has a positive effect on cancer-related genes.
If that’s not enough, avocados can reduce blood triglycerides and “bad” cholesterol levels (LDL) while increasing “good” cholesterol levels (HDL) significantly.
3. Avocados can save you
Avocados are both high in antioxidants and can increase the absorption of antioxidants coming from other foods. These antioxidants include the nutrients Lutein and Zeaxanthin which protects the eyes’ health in the long run.
Some studies have shown that avocados can protect you from cancer, reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and stop the growth of prostate cancer. It should be noted, however, that these studies were done on isolated cells and not on humans.
4. Avocados are good for your intestines and bones
Avocados contain around 27% of the recommended fiber intake. Fibers are very important for digestion; they make it faster and smoother. They can also reduce blood sugar levels and even contribute to weight loss.
Some studies have shown that extracts from avocado
reduce arthritis symptoms (osteoarthritis) and are good for the bones.
5. Avocados can help you lose weight
Some studies have shown that avocados can actually help you reduce your weight, as long as you eat it in moderation.
In one study people who ate avocado felt fuller faster and had a lower desire to eat afterwards. This may promote weight loss along with the high amounts of fiber that increase feelings of satiety and promote a healthy bowl movement.
